Acupuncture uses extremely fine and completely sterile FDA-regulated needles to nurture you back to health by helping resolve energy imbalances and balancing the flow of qi (vital energy) in your body.

The term 'acupuncture' derives from the Latin acus (needle) and pungere (to prick). In ancient China, the term was almost always referenced in combination with moxibustion, a therapeutic modality that involves burning the herb ai ye (艾叶) near acupoints on the body. Together, these modalities were referred to as 'needling and burning' (zhen jiu - 针灸) in ancient China. Bone and stone acupuncture implements have been unearthed dating back to 3,000 years B.C.

Acupuncture points are loci that lie along the jing luo (经络), the primary and collateral channels that traverse the body and through which qi (pronounced "chee") circulates throughout the body and accesses the zang fu (脏腑) or internal organs.

In the modern clinical setting, acupuncture may be supplemented by other 'exterior' modalities such as cupping, gua sha, or electro-acupuncture. For chronic, complex, or multi-factorial conditions, a qualified acupuncturist may compound one or more Chinese medicinal formulas for the patient to ingest. All of these are among the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) services offered at HealthPoint.

Most people experience no discomfort with acupuncture and you may even find that you fall asleep during treatment. It is not uncommon to feel a sense of relaxation and calm following a treatment session.

Acupuncture works whether or not you think it will. It is even used successfully on children and animals. They neither understand the mechanism nor have a particular bias regarding treatment, yet they improve regardless. A positive attitude helps with any type of therapy but it is not necessary to believe in acupuncture (or to feel it working) for it to be effective.
